Fremont, CA (January 15, 2011) -- Pete Boveberg and his teammate Curt Simmons were presented with their season championship awards at the Nitto Tires United States Touring Car Championship awards banquet on January 15, 2010 at le Mans Karting in Fremont, California. Also present to receive his award was the second place team of Gary Sheehan and Ken Dobson as well as the third place team of Felipe Cabezas and Ron Valtierra.
Bovenberg was extremely happy to receive the award after putting in a lot of hard work to not only be fast during the season but be reliable. The team even had to rebuild an entire car in the middle of the season after a fire destroyed most of their MBO Racing Honda Civic.
Leading the points for much of the season was the team of Sheehan and Dobson, ended up finishing in second place after some reliability issues hit their Cobb Tuning Mazdaspeed 3. A new car takes a while to figure out and the team hopes that the problems are now behind them.
Another team with problems during the season was the third place TNI Racing Mazdaspeed 3 of Valtierra and Cabezas. The rookie team started off slow but after a few races was starting to figure it out. The car was faster and faster at each race and things were looking up until disaster struck and the new Mazda rolled several times at Thunderhill. The fact that no one was hurt was a miracle in itself. Things looked bleak for the team but they decided to bring their backup car to finish the season and started to work to rebuild the primary car for the 2011 season.
The team of Valtierra and Cabezas also managed to win the Dupli Color Rookie of the Year title and were also presented with that award as well.
