USTCC at FIA World Touring Car: Mirzayan and McClure Win in Race 1. Sykes and Barber win in Race 2

Sonoma, CA – The Nitto Tires United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) was the support race for the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) at Sonoma Raceway on September 7-8, 2013. The event is one of only two FIA International events in the US for 2013 draws major international attention. Under the big lights, VJ Mirzayan’s Achilles Motorsports BMW M3 was on top in the GT class while another BMW M3, this one driven by Brad McClure, won the Touring class.

The GT podium was an all BMW podium with Daniel Akhromstev’s Domport Auto Body BMW M3 finishing in second followed by Sean Yepez’s Performance Technic BMW M3 who finished third.

McClure’s BTM Motorwerks/GoGoGear.com BMW M3 was only two seconds ahead at the finish ahead of Dave Brown’s Hawk Performance/Competition Clutch BMW M3. The only non BMW to finish on the podium was Ali Arsham’s GoGoGear.com/Universal Technical Institute who finished in third place in the Touring class.

Fred Watson was the top Sportsman driver winning the Orange Electronics Top Sportsman award in the Acutech Racing Acura.

Sunday’s race was full of action and it all started at the first drop of the green flag. Dave Lang’s Wipeout Bar and Grill BMW M3 shattered his differential at the start and managed to cover half the track in gear oil. The clean up necessitated a 30 minute red flag period after which the race was restarted. At the finish it was Geoff Sykes in his Replay XD BMW M3 who took the checkered flag first. Sykes was followed by Akhromstev who finished once again in second place. Finishing third was Andrie Hartanto in the Supertech/CT Engineering Honda S2000.

Tim Barber had mechanical problems in race 1 but managed to win race 2 in his TNI Racing/American Canyon Collision Mazdaspeed 3 by 1.5 seconds over McClure’s BMW. Jason Alexandridis got an impressive podium in only his second USTCC race in the BTM Motorwerks BMW M3.

Tom Milburn won the Orange Electronics Sportsman Award as the top Sportsman class driver in his Bay Area Drafting Acura RSX.
