November 9, 2013. Sonoma, CA -- Dave Brown, driving the Competition Clutch, Hawk Brakes, WORKS BMW M3 won the first ever night race in the history of the Nitto Tires United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) racing at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California. Sean Yepez, driving the Performance Technic BMW M3 won the GT class.
Brown may have won the race but the victory did not come easy as several lead changes occurred during the two hour long race. Jason Alexandridis was the early leader and the quickest Touring car on the track but he was forced to make an extra stop when the officials had to black flag him because the team forgot to put the window net on the BTM Motorwerks BMW M3. He fought back hard and managed to get within 13 seconds of Brown at the finish line. Tim Barber's TNI Racing Mazdaspeed 3 also was super quick and it looked like he was going to win but a flat tire caused him to finish out of the podium. Ali Arsham's GoGoGear.com /UTI Hyundai Genesis Coupe was leading the class with minutes to go and had a 50 second lead on Brown's BMW when the Hyundai ran low on fuel and Arsham was forced to pit which dropped him from first to fourth. The final podium position belonged to two time USTCC Champion, Pete Bovenberg, who managed to fight off mechanical problems that have plagued the team all year long in the MBO Motorsports Honda Civic.
The GT class was full of action as well as the battle was on between the BMW of Yepez and another BMW M3, this one driven by Daniel Akhromstev. Yepez lead the early stages with Andrie Hartanto running in second place in the CT Engineering/Supertech Honda S2000. Akhromstev had the quickest car in the GT class and soon took over the lead and kept it. But a fuel spill caused a five minute penalty to be assigned to Akhromstev which dropped him from the podium. Hartanto ended up in second place with a very happy Jim Stevens finished in third place in the Achilles Motorsports BMW M3.
