Fremont, CA -- Mike Shawhan, driver and crew member for BTM Motorwerks, won a close battle at the annual Nitto Tires United States Touring Car Championship (USTCC) karting challenge at Le Mans Karting of Fremont on February 22, 2014. Shawhan drove a spectacular race and managed to do the entire 90 minute race by himself. Finishing in second place was the team of Dave Brown and James Gouveia of the Life's Good Racing Team. In third place was the team of Mark McManus and Ali Arsham.
This year the competition seemed extremely tight with everyone in the field turning lap times within a second of each other. That made for some very aggressive driving which caused some collisions. One of the drivers said, "during a restart, things got really crazy and I got hot so hard that my seat actually moved and I could barely reach the steering wheel afterwards." Fortunately no one was hurt and everyone continued. By the end of the race, the top four karts were on the same lap only seconds apart from each other.
Now that the drivers have had time to warm up, it will be time to get on the track in the USTCC cars as the season will start soon on April 5 at Buttonwillow Raceway, near Los Angeles, California.
