Nose to tail all race long
San Ramon, CA – It comes down to the last race of the season! Rob Harper enters the race with a small 5pts lead over his closest competitor. After a start mishap, Rob got up to speed and was chasing the leading GT class Ford Performance Mustang all race long. There wasn’t anything in the lap times between the two cars and drivers. A close battle for the win ensued all the way to the checkered flag…
Rob Harper provides his Round 6 views:
“Starting from the front row right besides my closest competitor, I knew a good launch would likely be a deciding factor. However, we struggled off the line with what I thought was an engine stall. When I realized we were just spinning the wheels, I panic-dumped the clutch and spun through 3 gears before gaining tractable power up the hill into T2. It took a lap to settle in, with the Ford Mustang ahead a considerable distance. We were hundredths of a second faster which brought us to the bumper of the P1 car but we matched pace through to the final laps. A clearing opened to take the lead but a hard blocking move from our competitor thwarted our chance to overtake the Mustang. Within 3 laps of the finish, engine oil had coated our front windshield virtually eliminating our visibility. We blindly pushed the car to a very close 2nd place finish, making that start even more important. We now wait to learn the total and final points tally to know for sure who won the Championship. We did all we could all season long, fighting through adversities with both our GT cars. Through it all, the Red Panther Motorsport team has done an incredible job race after race to keep us in contention for the overall GT Championship! I am thrilled with our effort in this strange, year 2020.”
Red Panther Motorsport Team Owner, Reto Baumann:
“Every season has its ups and downs. Some have more swings than others. This one, certainly was one with larger swings in both directions for Rob Harper. From a perfect start into the season, to the main car breaking down and getting a replacement car, to getting back onto the top spot but still having to fight for the Championship down to the wire. Thanks to the Red Panther Motorsport crew and its partners and friends who did everything, making it possible to still be in the run for the top-class crown of the 2020 USTCC Championship with Rob.”
